about

Test Pressing #3 is more song orientated than the previous two volumes, though still plays around with more experimental sounds within that context. "Raise a Glass" was a pseudo-seasonal song, though as much for the New Year as for Christmas - it didn't get finished before the big day. The next two tracks reflect some interests of mine during the year: reading about two very different Germans, Ulrike Meinhof and Joseph Beuys. The songs aren't about them, but the first considers her as a subject for the academic narrator, whilst the second takes Beuys' "Felt Suit" which I saw at Tate Liverpool, as a jumping off point - much as his "Energy Plan for the Western Man" book had influenced the track on "Test Pressing #2." The 4th and final track "Lover's Bridge" is another of my "story songs", this about lovers caught in an unnamed war zone, padlocking their dreams to the lover's bridge and promising to come back in five years time. This issues old film star is Angie Dickinson in the classic western "Rio Bravo." As ever download or stream as you fancy.

Track Name: Raise a Glass
It’s been a year of much fighting
Now that years nearly done
when the world seemed to change
for the worse
And nobody had much fun

from east and west there’s been danger
the people have voted with fear
from out of the cloud comes a stranger
and you say you don’t want him near

so raise a glass for the lost ones
so raise a glass for the best
and raise a glass for the lonely
and raise a glass for the rest

when all of the people have spoken
and their voice is broken in two
the left and the right have no meaning
compared to me and you

music, and art, and dancing
mattered to us more than before
for without love we are lost souls
treading a dark road to war

so raise a glass for the lost ones
so raise a glass for the best
and raise a glass for the lonely
and raise a glass for the rest

let us remember the fallen
those who gave us such joy
and remember those being born today
for every new girl and boy

Let us go round our neighbours
and welcome them into our heart
and let us discover new colours
and let them into our art

so raise a glass for the lost ones
so raise a glass for the best
and raise a glass for the lonely
and raise a glass for the rest
Track Name: Ulrike Meinhof
I called myself an everyday intellectual
my ideas were great but my life was ineffectual
I had thoughts on race and transexuality
on the othering of others and our spectral capacity

By night drinking bourbon in a dark shebeen
by day in my campus room writing my reams
nobody reads the things that I write
I follow Neitsche into the dark night

I called out the haters who didn’t like hip hop
how casual misogyny in black music was a sop
to all the white liberals listening to Elvis
a southern white kid who like all whites was selfish

I met you and told you and explained in pictures
how love was a diktat and there should be no strictures
my ivory tower access pulled up the ladder
and whatever I said just made you madder

I’m working on a thesis that I can’t understand
it might be boring but it won’t be bland
I’m thinking it’s just one of a kind of
on the life and the motives of Ulrike Meinhof

Track Name: Felt Suit (after Joseph Beuys)
Was the comfort never as good as what the adverts said?
Could you never look as perfect as the photograph?
All the money spent on brand names and in faceless bars.
In the end there’s nothing more than the kindness of strangers.

Would I devote myself to languid times?
A paragraph in the Bible made you seek the light.
You might as well be wearing a felt suit
Which once worn can not again be straightened.

With a leap of faith the bond you made is breaking
And without redemption, your fate there’s no escaping.
Lost beyond the normal ways of your civilisation
Standing naked in the rain beyond all contemplation
Track Name: Lover's Bridge
If you don’t leave now
there’ll be no departing
they are closing in
and the killing’s starting

If you don’t leave now
I cannot protect you
Take the last road out of here
My friends expect you

All things change
but not forever
The war will end
and we will be together

hu-hu

At the lover’s bridge
we padlocked our dreams
They will still be there
once the nightmare ends

Live your life
and make it happy
Have no regrets
Whatever happens

Love and family
are my only reason
have For making this cruel fight
some real meaning

I will meet you in five years
at the Lover’s Bridge
