about

The 2nd volume of “The 4-Track Years 1985-6”, starts with three songs from the second side of “17 Schemes (of dare & folly)”, the delicate “Went down to Elisha’s Place”, the gothic “Shake me to my Soul” and the political “The Age of Austerity”.
It continues with an outtake “I swim Alone” which was released a couple of years later on the “Aesthete’s Revenge” compilation. Borrowing Sequential Circuits Max, I recorded a number of more intricate tracks, including the singles “Tamarine” and “The Sorrow.” The latter was a reworking of a Damn the Visual track from 1982, whilst the b-side was a long instrumental dub version of “I Wouldn’t be Afraid to Have you in my Back Lounge” by Bonbon Experiment. The new album “Entering the Adult Frame” was more ambitious – featuring drums on most tracks, and though the songs were still quite long, they were more structured, particularly the epic “The Adult Frame.” “King & Kingdom Come” on the other hand was a proto-house track, some six months before I’d even heard “Jack Your Body.” The dancey theme continued on “Work Addiction” which is included here in its original 16 minute mix. Further outtakes from the period pre-empt the more varied recording palate of the following year. It’s worth recalling that all of the tracks on these two volumes were written and recorded whilst I was still a teenager. Thirty years later, via cassette, CD…and now download, they still sound fresh and original.
