about

The 2nd CD of the 1989-90 selection is focused on 1990. It covers two albums - "There are No Beautiful People" and "Blues Cousin" - which was my slowest yearly output for years, and a sign of what was to come as albums became annual or even less frequent. "There are No Beautiful People" was a mix of styles, even including an old song "Godstrike" and a rap song "Valentine" whilst the 2nd side was a mostly instrumental suite. Both sides are showcased here with the first six tracks. Unlike 1989, I recorded quite a lot of outtakes this year. "Daughter of Invention" and the instrumental "Aquarian" could easily have been on "TANBP" but were left out. "Iguana Mantra" was a long experimental drone instrumental, whilst "Drop the Rhyme-bomb" was from a 5-track "rap" e.p. that I'd recorded in the wake of "Valentine." The 2 unreleased tracks that follow "Broke Up About It" and "C.A.S." were from another side project of shorter, punkier tracks, which I abandoned once I started recording "Blues Cousin". The next album did take a while to start and "Through my Fingers" was relegated to a b-side of album track "Whatever" whilst "Corporate Machine" didn't really fit the lyrically model of the new album. "Blues Cousin" was in many ways a "final" album - its one of my most musically intricate, and lyrically (all but one track was vocal), its as personal as I ever got, particularly on the minimal "The Real Thing". Its a quiet album, single paced, but the 6 tracks included here still stand up. This volume ends, and the 4-track years series ends, with one of two tracks from a single, the poppy, "There's Another Heaven", which were the last I recorded before I got a reverb unit - which changed my sound and can be heard in full on the "Nineties Sell Thru" compilation album that is also available from this website.
