about

In 1985-6 I recorded 2 long multi-part instrumentals "Myriads (1-4)" and "Complexities (1-6)". Despite their effectiveness, I never really went back to this style. So "Chimera" is both very old in conception and very new. It uses only 4-tracks (though I now have more) and the only instrument is the Juno 6, just like on those tracks. The only difference I guess is that I'm using my trusty Zoom effects processor throughout, as well as recording direct to digital rather than analogue. However, the method is the same as it was back then - recording the track in real time, and in order, each part inspiring the next. This was recorded over just 2 days - 29th-30th July 2017. Although a stand alone piece, I have some thoughts of using it as the basis for a vocal "concept" or even within a collage, but for now this 25 minute piece is both my latest recording and an echo of 32 years ago. Like then, my fascination has always been in what sounds I can get from my instrumentation, as well as being interested in the dynamic range possible in a long piece of music.
