There was a maiden
fair to the eye
And there was a soldier
he was passing by
She saw the soldier
and lowered her gaze
But it was too late
already he’s amazed

Then said the soldier:
“I’ve done many things,
I’ve hurt a man for money
Killed for my king
But for an hour
To take you in the wood
I’d forsake all killing
and turn my back on blood.”

And this kind maiden
as pure as the stream
Looked upon the soldier
like he was her dream
She thought of the lives
her action could save
and wished herself as virtuous
as the man was brave.


She said to the soldier:
“I could do as you please
let you take my hand
and slip between the trees.
This virtue of mine
I would happily give
If it meant
that another might live.”

“Come then” said the soldier
and got down off his ride.
“My honour is immense,
and you will be my bride.”

But then the maiden stopped him
as close to her he trod,
And said “your honour’s
between you and your god.
Whatever I would give you
wouldn’t remain whole,
I’d lose my virtue
but you’d still lose your soul”
